A mound-forming perennial, native to the Himalayas from Pakistan to Bhutan.  It is common in Kashmir, growing at 2,400 to 4,000m on open slopes.  It may look tender but is very hardy.  Large deep purple and white flowers are carried on stout, sticky stems held well above the foliage in spring and summer.  Moist but well drained soil in sun.  H&S 60-90cm
