Once a traditonal Scottish 'cure all', regarded as a 'sovereign cure' for sheep cough in the late 17th century, it was also eaten to ward off scurvy. Islanders on the Outer Hebrides used to chew the roots of this plant as a substitute for tobacco, supplies from the mainland not always being reliable.
This rarely grown native perennial has attractive, glossy foliage on red tinted stems. Umbels of white flowers in June-Aug are followed by golden seed heads. The flowers are loved by bees and butterflies. Very hardy. H&S 60cm x 40cm (24in x 16in).
